I plan to run the Berlin Marathon this year under charity Organization for Austim Reserach (OAR). I chose this charity because it is dear to my heart. My son was diagnosed with high functioning autism when he was three years old. I noticed subtle things but didn't know or underatnd what it was until I got him tested. When he was initially diagnosed, I remember crying uncontrollably. I will never forget that day. I was afraid and ashamed to share the diagnosis with anyone. I had so many emotions but mostly felt lost and alone that no one would understand the hurt and pain that goes along with it.
According to CDC (2018), 1 out of 41 boys and 1 in 189 girls are diagnosed with autism in the United States. Boys are 3 times more likely to have autism more than girls. Approximately, 100 individuals are being diagnosed daily with autism.
My son was diagnosed early and received speech and intense occupational therapy. Some kids never get diagnosed and miss out on the necessary early intervention.This could partrly be because of knowledge deficit or lack of resources. Knowing what signs to look for truly helps. Early intervention can change an autistic child's life. I plan to run in honor of my amazing son who will be going to 5th grade this fall and is on the honor's roll and principal's list. He loves school and wants to be an engineer when he grows up. I want to make my miles meaningful by fundraising for a worthy cause and Organization for Autism Reseach was the perfect fit because I fell like there is so much we don't know or undertsand about it. We are still not sure how or why mostly boys boys are affected, what causes it or even how we can prevent it. I am asking for everyone's help. All contributions will go towards Organization for Autism Research (OAR), a national non-profit organization that funds research and offer resources as well as scholarship to kids with autism. All donations are tax deductible. My goal is to raise $2500. I plan to raise the money necessary to fund research as well as provide valuable resources to autistic children and their families. I would appreciate if I can get about 50 people to donate $20 but any amount donated is truly appreciated. Every donation will make a huge difference in an autistic child's life.
