Although I have some knowledge of autism, recently, the first child of one of my colleagues was diagnosed with the condition. As I made myself available to help and provide support during this process, it made me aware of the challenges that the parents of autistic children go through. This experience has touched me on a very particular way, as I had to read and learn about the condition in order to provide support beyond my manager role. I became a friend, a support, and the person that conveys a positive message for my coworker to continue pursuing dreams, goals and a professional career.

At first, when things were still unclear about the possibility of the autism diagnostic, we had many difficult conversations; up to the point quitting the job was a consideration. It was understandable, family comes first.

So we found a workaround and after going through the storm together, we adjusted and my coworker is exceeding at work, and the child was officially diagnosed with the condition and is getting excellent care.

Aside from this humbling and inspiring situation, I am single, have no kids, and thanks to God I am healthy and in great condition to participate and complete full marathons besides other activities. I love to run and to date; I have completed 4 full marathons and 10 half-marathons.

It is my first time to attend through charity and it is something I’ve always wanted to do. Not just to get a spot in the race, but for a cause and something meaningful. This year, the Berlin Marathon is on the same day as of my birthday (16-Sept) so it’s going to be a very meaningful race for me. I wish to give myself the birthday present of helping other people while doing what I love.
