While in nursing school, I completed a project on Autism. I have several friends with children who are on the spectrum, and I've taught many kids who were on the spectrum. Completing that project gave me a better insight into what life is like for a child who's on the spectrum, as well as the lives of the parents and siblings. I had the chance to volunteer at an organization in Houston that catered to adults with disabilities, and some of them were on the autism spectrum as well.
After having these experiences, it was natural for me to sign up with the Organization for Autism Research (OAR) as I raise money while simultaneously training to run the Berlin Marathon. I will proudly wear my OAR shirt when I run the marathon. OAR was founded by and is led by familes of adults and children with autism. Their goal is to provide an enhanced quaility of life for children with autism.
